Smart Materials Flashcards
What do smart materials do?
Smart materials react to an external stimulus by changing their characteristics and/or properties
What external stimuli can cause change in the materials?
Stress, Temperature, Moisture, Electric/Magnetic Fields, UV light
What are some different types of Smart Materials?
Piezoelectric, Photochromic, Phosphorescent, Thermochromic
What are Thermochromic pigments?
When hot and cold temperatures trigger a change of colour, can be seen in childrens cutlery
What are Photochromic particles?
When UV light reacts with photosensitive silver halide particles within the lenses, seen in prescription sunglasses
What are Piezoelectric materials?
Materials where charge accumulates in response to applied mechanical stress.
What are Phosphorescent materials?
When energy from the sun is absorbed by a ‘material’ and its released slowly over a long time, in the form of light.
