Smart Material And Modern Material Flashcards
What are smart materials?
Smart materials are designed and manufactured through scientific discoveries and are engineered for particular functions.
What are modern materials?
Modern materials are manufactured to make changes to the molecular level of structure or use nanoparticles, often inspired by nature (biomimicry).
What is Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) or nitinol?
A material that returns to its original shape when heated (90°+) and contracts when an electric current passes through it.
Used in stents in blood vessels, spectacle frames, and valves or pumps.
What is Shape Memory Polymer (SMP)?
A polymer that deforms in response to heat or electric voltage.
What are thermochromic inks?
Inks that change color in response to temperature.
Used in forehead thermometer strips and food packaging to indicate food temperature.
What are photochromic inks?
Inks that change color in response to light levels, such as ultraviolet and infrared light.
Used in shaded glasses that darken in UV light.
What is a lenticular sheet?
An embossed polymer sheet with optical properties that make the surface appear deeper with patterns or create flickering images.
Available in small pellets that fuse when heated and can be molded to form tough polymer.
What is smart grease?
A viscous gel that uniformly controls movement between two friction surfaces.
Used to prototype difficult shapes and to dampen movement on volume control knobs.
