Small RNAs in the Regulation of Biological Processes Flashcards
What is c value?
size of genome
Name the regulatory ncRNA and their function
microRNA - controls most gene translation
siRNA - viral defence
piRNA - germ cell production
long ncRNA - X chromosome inactivation
What is lyonization?
one of the two x chromosomes in females is inactivated
Recall the lyonization process
inactive X silenced by being packaged so it is a transcriptionally inactive structure - HETEROCHROMATIN, chosen X is random and last a lifetime
Lyonization purpose
prevents female cells from having twice the X chromosome genes as male cells
What controls lyonization?
Xist
What is dicer essential for?
embryonic stages, allows stem cells to differentiate and stops multipoint stem cell depletion
