Gene Organisation and Transcription 1 Flashcards
Define housekeeping gene
genes expressed in every cell, needed for normal cell function and viability
Define antisense strand
transcribed DNA strand (opposite of RNA produced)
Function of transcription factors
proteins that assist and regulate transcription by binding to DNA
Function of RNA polymerase 1
transcribes rRNA genes
Function of RNA polymerase 2
transcribes genes encoding proteins into mRNA
Function of RNA polymerase 3
transcribes tRNA and 5S RNA genes
Define gene promoter
DNA sequence at which ignition complex assembles
Name the 3 stages of transcription
initiation, elongation, termination
Describe initiation
RNA polymerase binds to gene promoter sequence and separates the strands, exposing template
Describe elongation
RNA polymerase reads template strand and builds RNA molecule from free nucleotides in 5’ to 3’ direction
Describe termination
terminator DNA sequence signals that transcription is complete and once transcribed releases the RNA molecule from the RNA polymerase
What causes gene expression?
hyperacetylation
What causes gene repression?
hypoacetylation
What factors determine transcription factor expression?
cell lineage, external signals to cell (hormones, stress), mutated TF, cancer
