Introduction

A

On the 20th of April 2022, i saw a live performance of Small Island at Olivier National theatre. The play was directed by Rufus Norris and adapted by Helen Edmunson. It is about two Jamaican immigrants, Hortense and Gilbert (played by Leonnie Elliot and Leemore Marret Jr), who came to London as part of the Windrush generation, navigating their lives in a predominantly post-WW2 Britain.

Elliot demonstrated Hortense’s embarrassment and humiliation, her character flaws are exposed which brings her discomfort.
Although this scene seems very negative, it highlights their level of intimacy and understanding of each other as Gilbert can break through her coldness and reveal her true, vulnerable self.
influences audience members to grow a fondness towards Hortense due to her clearly unsettled, disregarded emotions
