Small Intestine/Colon 1 Path - Nelson Flashcards
3 overall causes of ischemic bowel disease?
Acute obstruction
Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis
Hypoperfusion
Complications of transmural bowel necrosis?
Sepsis once the mucosal layer us broken down
Could cause septic shock and death
What segments of bowel are most likely to be affected by ischemia?
Segments at the end of an arterial supply
Splenic flexure, sigmoid colon, rectum
What is the name for a lesion consisting of malformed submucosa and mucosa blood vessels?
Angiodysplasia
- 20% of lower GI bleeds
Quick Pathophysiology of celiac sprue:
Go!
- Gliatin in gluten triggers cytotoxic t-cell immune response
- Epithelial cell damage causes villous atrophy
- Malabsorption issues occur
What is Whipple Disease?
Systemic infection with Tropheryma Whippelii
Organism-laden foamy macrophages accumulate in the lamina propria of small bowel (and other organs)
See diarrhea, weight loss, malabsorption, and abdominal pain
What is abetalipoproteinemia?
It is an autosomal recessive mutation in the MTP protein
Presents in infancy with build-up of TGs in the cytoplasm because transepithelial transport of TGs can’t occur
See spiny burr cells
