SMALL INTESTINE Flashcards
Connects stomach to large intestine; major site for digestion and absorption.
Small intestine
First fixed segment of the small intestine; receives bile and pancreatic ducts.
Duodenum
Longest segment of the small intestine; suspended by mesojejunum.
Jejunum
Final short segment of the small intestine; connects to cecum or colon.
Ileum
Peritoneal fold suspending jejunum and ileum from the dorsal abdominal wall.
Great mesentery
Attachment point of the mesentery at the dorsal body wall near the cranial mesenteric artery.
Root of the mesentery
Aggregates of lymphoid tissue found in the ileum; prominent in ruminants.
Peyer’s patches
Mesenteric fold connecting the ileum to the cecum.
Ileocecal fold
Mesenteric fold connecting the duodenum to the descending colon.
Duodenocolic fold
S-shaped cranial duodenal curve in horses, pigs, and ruminants.
Sigmoid loop
Connection between the ileum and cecum in horses.
Ileocecal opening
Dilated cranial part of the duodenum in horses.
Duodenal ampulla
Ileal connection to the ascending colon in carnivores and ruminants.
Ileocolic opening
Junction of ileum, cecum, and colon in ruminants.
Ileocecocolic opening
Duodenal pouch receiving pancreatic and hepatic ducts in horses
Diverticulum duodeni
