Length: 30m
Specifications of General Purpose Rope
(construction, melting point, minimum breaking strength & safe work load)
Construction: three-strand right hand lay
Melting point: 250c
Minimum breaking strength: 2200kg
Safe working load: 450kg
What is general purpose rope used for?
Securing equipment, tying suction hoses, hauling hose line and gear aloft.
What does TRUSS stand for?
(Characteristics of a good knot)
T- is easy to tie
R- is easily recognised when tied
U- is easy to unite
S- should not slip or over tighten
S- will not reduce or damage the strength
What does STRICT stand for?
(Knot protocol)
S- ensure correct knot is selected for the task
T- place tension on the line to set and tighten the knot
R- all knots must be removed/released from the line after use
I- all knots must be inspected after tying. Look away and recheck.
C- all knots to be checked by another FF
T- all knots must have no less then 150mm tail after tightening
What is an overhand knot used for?
To prevent line unnerving through a snatch block or pulley.
What is a half hitch used for?
Forms part of several different types of knots and is also used to prevent a knot from unravelling.
What is a clove hitch used for?
Used for securing the end of a rope and small gear and is sometimes used in conjunction with a half hitch.
What is a rolling hitch used for?
Used to tie around cylindrical shaped objects - will not slip in the direction in which the double turn in applied
What is a round turn & two half hitches used for?
Securing a line to a spar or any round object.
What is a double sheet bend used for?
Is used to join ropes in different thicknesses (thicker rope must be used to form the bight)
What is the bowline used for?
Makes a secure loop e.g. can raise and lower objects

What is a figure 8 stopper?
LRL - tied in the running end as a stopper to prevent an object coming off the line.
What is a figure 8 on the bight used for?
LRL - creates a non-slip loop in the end of a rope that can be attached to a harness
What is a double fisherman’s used for?
LRL- join LRL of identical diameter
What is a butterfly used for?
LRL - designed specifically for 3 way loading
What are the components of a Karabiner?
Latch, locking sleeve, gate, hinge, mino/major axis, well.
Where is the ventral attachment on a harness? And what is it used for?
Belly button - fall prevention
Where is the dorsal attachment on a harness? And what is it used for?
Upper back - attachment point for fall arrest
Where is the sternal attachment on a harness? And what is it used for?
Sternum - attachment point for fall arrest
What are the waist side attachments used for on a harness?
Fall prevention while maintaining a working position.
