Small furries Flashcards
How do you get blood out of a ferret?
Cephalic vein
Jugular vein
(Tail artery-lab animals)
What is thermoregulation controlled by?
Hypothalamus
What name is given to open-rooted teeth?
Aradicular
What name is given to continually-growing teeth?
Elodont
During coprophagy, what vitamin is obtained from colonic bacteria in faecal pellets?
B vitamins
Where are the venepuncture sites in rats?
Ventral tail artery, lateral saphenous, lateral tail vein
When should guinea pigs be mated by?
Why?
7-10 months
Pubic symphysis fuses after this-subsequent dystocia
What is the blood volume of a ferret?
5-7% bodyweight
Why must female ferrets be mated?
Failure of gill to mate means she stays in oestrus, resulting in continual high exposure to high oestrogen. This can lead to bone marrow depression, anaemia and death
When do female ferrets reach puberty?
6-9 months
Describe the pathophysiology of adrenal disease in ferrets
Cells with LH receptors are present in the adrenal gland of ferrets.
Neutering removes feedback inhibition from gonadal steroids resulting in high levels of GnRH, and hence LH and FSH.
LH continually stimulates adrenal cells causing hyperplasia and neoplasia.
Why is it difficult to pass a nasal gastric tube in a ferret?
Narrow ventral space in the nasal conchae
What is a rabbits systolic BP?
90-135mmHg
What are the venepuncture sites of a rabbit?
Jugular, lateral saphenous, cephalic, marginal ear veins
Where does the ileum end in the rabbit?
Sacculus rotundus (looks like round yellow button) at junction with colon and caecum
