SM1 Flashcards
The troposphere
8- 14.5 km high.
Densest layer
Contains almost all weather.
Most light aircraft fly here.
The tropopause
Is a thermodynamic gradient-stratification layer.
Marks the end of the troposphere.
Average altitude of 11km. (36,000 feet)
Is the regular cruising altitude for modern jets.
Air is thinner so less drag.
Stratosphere.
Goes up to 50km / 31 miles.
Temp is generally constant at -56.5 degrees
Many jets can cruise here.
Factors which effect the quality of the air
Pressure.
Temperature.
Density.
Humidity.
1atm in mmHg
760
Atmospheric density at sea level.
1.225 kg/m^3
Humidity and relative humidity.
Humidity is greatly affected by temperature.
Density decreases when humidity increases.
Pressure, temp. And humidity all effect air density.
Equation for the speed of sound.
A = 20 x root T
