SLT Flashcards
What is SLT ?
A way of explaining behaviour that includes direct and indirect reinforcment , combining learning theory with cognitive factors
Assumptions of SLT :
- Agree with behaviourists that behaviour is learnt from experience but
-behaviour is learnt through observation and imitation of others within a social context.
-SLT occurs directly (classical and operant) but also indirectly
Indirect learning :
Vicarious reinforcement ; where an individual observes the behaviour of others , learner may imitate this behaviour but imitaion only occurs if behaviour is seen to be rewarded rather than punished.
How is SLT and cognitive approach linked ?
SLT is often described as a bridge between traditional learning theory and cognitive approach because it focuses on how mental factors are involved in learning
What are the four mental processes (cognitive factors)
Attention
Retention
Motor reproduction
Motivation
Attention + retention = learning behaviour
Motor + motivation = performance of behaviour
What is identification ?
When an observer’s associates themselves with a role model and wants to be like their role model
Role models :
People are more likely to imitate the behaviour of people with whom they identify.
Characteristics of a role model ;
Higher status
Same gender
Possess similar characteristics to the observer and/or attractive
