What does the Humanistic approach say ?
An approach to understanding behaviour that emphasises the importance of subjective experience and each persons capacity for self - determination.
- Person centered approach
What does humanism claim
Humanisms claims that human beings are self-determining and have free will.
What is free will ?
The notion that humans can make choices and not determined by biological or external factors
What does it mean to have free will ?
It does not mean people are not affected by external or internal influences but we are active agents who have the ability to determine our own development.
What do humanistic psychologists reject ?
They reject scientific models that attempt to establish general principles of human behaviour. As active agents we are UNIQUE.
What is self-actualisation ?
The desire to grow psychologically and fulfill ones full potential - becoming what you are capable of
How does Maslow’s hierachy of needs work ?
All four levels of hierachy must be met before the individual can work towards self-actualisation and fulfil their potential.
What does self- actualisation represent ?
The uppermost level of Maslow’s hierachy of needs.
What is personal growth ?
It is an essential part of being a human.
-It is concerned with developing and changing as a person to become fulfilled , satisfied and goal-orientated.
THERE MAY BE PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS TO PREVENT THIS

What is the self ?
The ideas and values that characterise ‘I’ and ‘me’ and includes perception and valuing ‘what iam’ and ‘what I can do’
-The way they see themself
Congruence :
Where the self concept and ideal self are seen to broadly match
What is incongruence?
If there is too big a gap to exist between the two selves, the person will experience a state of incongruence and self actualisation will not be possible due to negative feelings of self worth.
What did rogers develop ?
Client centred therapy.
What is client centred therapy for ?
To help people cope with problems of everyday living.
