Slt Flashcards
Assumptions (2)
- agrees with behaviourists, much of our behaviour is learned from the environment. But SLT proposes people learn through OBSERVATION AND IMITATION OF OTHERS
- suggests that learning can occur directly (through conditioning) and indirectly
Vicarious reinforcement
- for indirect learning to take place, an individual observes the behaviour of others
- learner (in general) imitates behaviour if it is seen to be rewarded rather than punished
- therefor edit is telling us the learner observes the behaviour, but more importantly the consequences of the behaviour
The role of SLT
- often described at the “bridge” between traditional learning theory and the cognitive approach. Focuses on how mental factor are involved in learning
Mental factors involved in learning
These mental factors mediate in the learning process to determine whether a new response is acquired .
The four meditational processes
1) attention
2) retention
3) motor reproduction
4) motivation
Attention
The extent to which we notice certain behaviours
Retention
How well the behaviour is remembered
Motor reproduction
The ability of the observer to perform the behaviour
Motivation
The will to perform the behaviour- which is often determined by whether the beh is rewarded or punished.
Which proceses relate to the LEARNING of behaviour
Attention and retention
Performance of behaviour
Motor reproduction and motivation.
- observed behaviours may be stored by the observer and reproduced at a latter time.
Identification
People (especially children) are much more likely to imitate the behaviours of a person whom they identify with = called role models !
- this process is called modelling
Role models
A person tends to become a role model if they posses similar characteristics to the observer. (Age, gender) (or/ and attractive and high status)
- role models may not be physically present in the environment- can have important implications for the influence of the media on behaviour.
Identification
Attaching oneself to a model because they have the qualities you wish to possess
Imitation
Copying a behaviour
