Humanism
- explanations relating to healthy growth of ppl
- positive + optimistic
- direct contrast to behaviourism ( nomothetic) and psychodynamic (negative)
- humanism emphasises subjective experiences (idiographic)
Idiographic
Focuses on the uniqueness of individuals
Assumptions ((5)
- humans should be viewed holistically
- people have free will (choice)
- people strive to reach their full potential
-Congruence is crucial to psychological health - each person is unique (idiographic )
Hollistic
Considers every aspect of behaviour and the mind as they all shape behaviour (opposite to reductionism )
Free will (4)
- free will- humans are self determining
- rejects scientific models which ism for general laws of behaviour
- individuals are unique
- it is a person- cantered approach .
Order of the hierarchy of needs
Psychological needs (food + water )
Safety + security
Love + belonging
Self esteem
Self actualisation
Self actualisation
(Reaching full potential) (acceptance/ happiness)
- can’t always be measured
- innate tendency to achieve full potential
Personal growth is ESSENTIAL (development and change of the individual to allow them to feel fulfilled +satisfied)
- not everyone manages it
Hierarchy of needs
Move up the triangle.
- cannot skip levels
- it is possible to fall back a stage

Incongruente (carl rogers)
- the gap/ separation between ideal self and real self.
- psychologically unhealthy - cannot reach self actualisation .
- caused by a lack of unconditional positive regard from parents ( parents place conditions of worth on children)
Reducing incongruente
- client cantered therapy
- building real self towards ideal self ( closing the gap)
Individualistic vs collectivist
- all about me
- self actualisation
- UK (more western)
- all about community
- eg india + more eastern
