a patient’s meds can be a source of a problem contributing to symptoms of dysphagia and cognitive functioning
what is an example of medication-induced esophageal injury?
advil on an empty stomach
what are common meds that cause dysphagia and suppress CNS
anticholinergics, antipsychotics, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, neuromuscular blocking and muscle relaxers
how do anticholinergics cause problems?
suppress GI secretions and mobility, which affects all phases of swallowing; decreased saliva can affect taste, appetite, and anticipatory stage of the swallow; reduced lubrication in nasal passages
what is xerostomia?
dry mouth
how do antipsychotic medications affect swallowing?
xerostomia, reduced taste and smell, impaired cognition
how do antidepressants affect swallowing?
GI side effects, decreased PO intake, changes in taste which may lead to loss of appetite
what are medications that can cause esophageal injury?
aspirin, iron, potassium chloride, vitamin C
