A

prevents hepatitis b and potential complications of liver cancer. Those at risk include: those with many sex partners, gay men, IV drug users, travelers, HC providers, individuals on long term dialysis, inmates.

17
Q

Secondary prevention strategies include

A

screening for chronic conditions like CV disease, DM and Cancer, or associated risk factors for disease, detection of diseases early on, and early treatment of disease.

18
Q

What conditions are most associated with CV disease and, thus, are necessary to screen for?

A

stress, obesity, HTN, coronary artery disease, and high cholesterol

19
Q

The ethnic group most at risk for CV disease is?

A

african americans

20
Q

An individuals risk for HTN rises when their BP is what value? (this is called pre-hypertension)

A

115/75

21
Q

Recommendations that the nurse should include for p’s with HTN include?

A

exercising, maintaining a healthy diet, low sodium intake- or no added salt diet.

22
Q

What should normal cholesterol levels be? What values indicate borderline high risk individuals and high risk individuals?

A

normal should be 240mg/ml

23
Q

High density lipoproteins

A

normally should be > 60 mg/ml
protect against heart attacks
may even remove excess cholesterol from ateries

24
Q

low density lipoproteins

A

normally should be < 100 mg/ml
causes atherosclerosis
narrows arteries
increases risk for MI and stroke

25
Q

Angina

A

chest pain that occurs when inadequate oxygenated blood flows to the heart. S&S include- chest tightness, pressure radiating to arms, neck, jaw, and back, may occur at rest or with exertion.

26
Q

Nurses should educate patients on managing chest pain by doing what?

A

stopping current activity, sit down and rest, take nitrogylcerin medication if ordered by HCP, call 911 if pain isn’t relieved within 15 minutes.

27
Q

The nurses role in screening for type 2 DM includes?

A

assessing fasting blood glucose levels, instructing patient to receive annual check up with HCP to diagnose and treat early b/c the disease is deadly.

28
Q

How is type 2 DM diagnosed?

A

DM is diagnosed by a patient having 2 consecutive fasting blood glucose levels of 125mg/dl or greater.

29
Q

T or F: An individuals overall risk of cancer increases with age.

A

true

30
Q

How common is prostate cancer among men? When is it particularly important to diagnose it? How do provider’s screen for it?

A

2nd most common cancer among men.
Important to diagnose it when it localized to the prostate and has not metastasized. Screening methods include: evaluating complaints of symptoms from patient, Prostate specific agent (PSA) blood test, and digital rectal exam.

31
Q

A woman’s risk for breast cancer increases is she…?

A

has a family history (could have inherited gene), has never had children, or if she had her first child after age 30.

32
Q

What are the recommendations for screening for breast cancer?

A

Recommendations include receiving an annual mammogram after age 40 and an annual clinical exam.

33
Q

What procedures should be done to screen for cervical cancer? How often should they be performed?

A

Pap smears and annual clinical examinations, which should be done every year.

34
Q

Nurses would include aotf as risk factors for CERVICAL cancer except:

a) exposure to latex chemicals
b) sexual activity at an early age
c) multiple sex partners
d) IV drug use

A

d) IV drug use is not one of the stated risk factors for cervical cancer. Two other risk factors are smoking and exposure to environmental carcinogens.
