Slime Molds Flashcards
Lecture 10
1
Q
What is the state of slime molds pre-reproduction, and how do they reproduce?
A
- Haploid
- Single celled
- Over 700 sexes in some species
- Via spores
2
Q
What are slime molds classified as?
A
Not fungi. Groups within Amoebozoa and other groups like Stramenopila.
3
Q
Give a summary of plasmodial slime molds.
A
- Haploid, free living cells
- Diploid zygote after plasmogamy and karyogamy
- Large multi nucleated plasmodium
4
Q
How to plasmodial slime molds reproduce?
A
- Formation of sporangia occurs, then meiosis and then spore production.
- Spores disperse into new single celled amoeboid cells.
5
Q
Give a summary of Cellular slime molds.
A
- Live mostly in single celled amoebae
- Aggregate into a ‘slug’ that can migrate when food is scarce.
- They reproduce by creating a stalk that fruits and bears spores which disperse.
6
Q
Where do slime nets usually live?
A
- In marine habitats
- Or parasitic on algae or decomposers
7
Q
Give a summary of Slime Nets.
A
- Network of filaments and tubes
- Single celled, moving along filaments and tubes in this network.
8
Q
Why is it surprising that slime molds are able to solve puzzles, remember, and learn?
A
They have no brain or nerve cells.
9
Q
Are slime molds multicellular?
A
They alternate between single and multi celled.
