A
- Even Curley listens to him
- He stops George and Lennie being fired and tells Curley that “his hand got trapped in a machine”
- He inspires a confidence in George: when George tells him about the incident in Weed, he knows Slim will be empathetic

- He understands George’s difficult position
- He is the only one to empathise and comfort George after he has killed Lennie, when the others do not understand George’s grief

- He is present at every event: Candy’s Dog, Curley fighting Lennie, finding Curley’s Wife’s body
- He helps the assessment of the situation do what is merciful or right
