Sliding Filament Theory - The Sarcomere Flashcards
1
Q
what are the characteristics of a myofibril
A
- runs all the way through from one end of a muscle to the other end
- divided into sarcomeres (segments) by z-lines
2
Q
structure of the sarcomere
A
- actin (thin) filaments attached to z-line made of protein
- myosin (thick) filaments attached to z-line made of protein
- titin filaments connect myosin to the z-line
3
Q
what are the zones of a sacromere
A
- i band (the zone either side of the z-line)
- a band (the length of the myosin
- h zone (middle of the sarcomere)
4
Q
what is the sliding filament theory
A
when a muscle contracts, filaments slide past one another, bringing the z-lines closer together
5
Q
what happens when a concentric contraction occurs
A
filaments slide past one another
