How does Robert Sternberg view love?
He views it as a triangle consisting of 3 components, passion, intimacy and commitment
What is passionate love?
It is a state if intense longing for union with another, it involves the same reward pathways in the brain as substance addiction
What is the two-factor theory of emotion?
It suggests that in a romantic context, arousal from any source, even painful experiences, can be steered into a passion
What are some variations in love in terms of culture and gender?
- Marriages for love versus arranged marriages
- Men fall in love more readily but fall out of love more slowly
- Men are more focused on the playful and physical side of a relationship
- Women are more focused on intimacy and concern for partner
What is companionate love?
It refers to the affection we feel for those with whom our lives are deeply intertwined. It occurs after passionate love fades
What are the 3 main attachment styles?

What is secure attachment?
These are attachments rooted in trust and marked by intimacy
What is avoidant attachment?
These are attachments marked by discomfort over, or resistance to, being close to others
What is anxious attachment?
These are attachments marked by anxiety or ambivalence
What is equity?
It refers to a condition in which the outcomes people receive from a relationship are proportional to what they contribute to it
What is long-term equity?
As people observe their partners being self-giving, their sense of trust grows.
What is self-disclosure?
It refers to revealing intimate aspects of oneself to others
What is disclosure reciprocity?
It refers to the tendency for one person’s intimacy or self-disclosure to match that of a conversational partner
