Describe stage one of the sleep cycle.
Drowsiness, the person can be awakened with out much difficulty, may feel like they haven’t slept at all.
Describe stage 2 of the sleep cycle.
Light sleep, spontaneous periods of muscle relaxation/muscle tightening. Heart rate slows and body temperature decreases.
Describe sleep stages 3 and 4 of the sleep cycle.
These stages are deep sleep stages, stage 4 is more intense than stage 3. Known as slow wave or delta sleep.
Describe stage 5 of the sleep cycle.
This stage is REM sleep, when intense dreaming occurs. Heightened cerebral activity occurs but paralysis occurs in the main muscle groups throughout the body.
What stages are non-REM sleep and what stages are REM sleep?
Stages 1-4 = Non-REM sleep
Stage 5 = REM sleep
