Name the 3 general categories of sleep disorder.
Insomnia
Hypersomnia
Parasomnia
Describe insomnia.
This is the inability to fall asleep or when a person cannot stay asleep. This is most common in older people or those with anxiety.
Describe hypersomnia.
The opposite of insomnia, this is when a person feels sleepy a lot of the time, finding it hard to stay awake during the day.
Describe parasomnia.
Parasomnia is the term used t describe abnormal sleeping behaviours or emotions while sleeping such as sleep walking.
What are some examples of sleep disorders?
Sleep apnoea
Night terrors
Sleep walking
Circadian rhythm sleep disorder (CRSD)
What is sleep apnoea?
This is when a person stops breathing briefly during sleep for a couple seconds. This can happen multiple times a night. Person wakes up due to the body detecting an increase of co2 in the blood and is characterised by sharp intakes of breath and spluttering.
How can sleep apnoea be treated?
With a conscious positive airway pressure device (CPAP)
