Sleep Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
What do sleep studies include?
A
- Polysomnography (PSG)
- Multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)
- Actigraphy (relatively non-invasive method of monitoring human rest/activity cycles)
2
Q
What are the ways to measure sleep?
A
Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electrooculogram (EOG), Electromyogram (EMG)
3
Q
How does EEG measure sleep?
A
It measures the electrical changes in the brain. The electrodes are placed on the scalp.
4
Q
How does EOG measure sleep?
A
It measures the electrical changes as the eye rotates in its socket. The electrodes are placed either above and below the eye or left and right of the eye.
5
Q
How does EMG measure sleep?
A
It measures the electrical changes generated during muscle contraction. The electrodes are placed under the chin.
6
Q
How do EEG, EOG & EMG work together to measure sleep?
A
- They’re recorded simultaneously and the patterns of activity in these 3 systems provide basic classification for the different types of sleep.
- they all measure surface level electrical changes
