Cardiovascular System & Diseases Flashcards
What is the cardiovascular system?
An organ system that distributes blood to all parts of the body
What is the major function of the cardiovascular system?
transportation, using blood as the transport vehicle, ultimately transports blood too
What does the cardiovascular system do?
- carries oxygen, nutrients, cell wastes, hormones and other substances vital for body homeostasis to and from cells
- pressure allows the force to move blood around the body
What is the pericardium?
the heart enclosed by the double-walled sac
What is the fibrous pericardium?
the superficial loosely fitted part of the heart; protects and anchors the heart
What are the 2 systems that act to regulate heart activity?
Autonomic nervous sytem
Intrinsic conduction system
What is the autonomic nervous system?
(Brakes and accelerator)
it acts to decrease or increase heart rate
What is intrinsic conduction system?
also nodal system,
it’s composed of specialized tissue that’s a cross between muscle nad nervous tissue,
causes heart muscle depolarization from the atria to the ventricles
