A

Most common in adolescents/young adults
“night owl” tendencies delay sleep onset
If allowed to sleep in (around 3pm) person OK
Causes daytime sleepiness
Most are often alert, productive, and creative late at night

A

Usually seen in elderly
Person has early evening bedtimes (6-9pm) and early morning waking (2-5am)
Are usually sleepy in late afternoon or early evening
“morning larks”

Medications for Insomnia

A

Benzodiazepine hypnotics:
Lorazepam
Temazepam

Nonbenzodiazepine hypnotics:
Zolpidem (Ambien)
Zaleplon (Sonota)
The above are good choices for the elderly

Antihystamines:
Diphenhydramine
Hydroxyzine

A

Lasts for about 15 minutes each, can be longer.
May happen after eating, while driving, talking to someone or during other situations
Most often, person wakes up feeling refreshed.
