What is partial sleep deprivation?
Sleeping for some time but not getting sufficient sleep
What is total sleep deprivation?
Not sleeping at all
What is selective sleep deprivation?
Not getting enough of a particular type of sleep REM or NREM
What is chronic sleep deprivation?
Loss of sleep over a prolonged period of time
What is acute sleep deprivation?
No sleep for a short time period
Ethical concerns studying sleep deprivation?
Participants must be aware of potential risks and must not be harmed in any way during an experiment
Sleep deprivation psychological effects?
- anxiety
- hallucinations
- impaired memory
- difficulty making decisions
- paranoia
Sleep deprivation physiological effects?
- sleepiness + fatigue
- droopy eyelids
- aches + pains in body
- inability to fight disease
- impaired co-ordinarion
Loss of rem sleep ->?
- ^ aggressive
- v concentration
- poorer memory
- REM rebound
Loss of NREM sleep?
- hinder growth b/c loss of hormone released in NREM
- may hinder restoration of body
After sleep deprivation?
- fall asleep faster then normal
- total time asleep ^

How much sleep is needed after sleep deprivation?
- 13-15 hours first night + slightly ^ then normal in 2nd and 3rd nights
- paying back sleep debt
- > difference b/w sleep needed + sleep actually gotten
What is microsleep?
- naturally drift into micro sleep after 3-4 days of sleep
- short period NREM sleep around 30secs
- usually alpha + theta waves = resembles early stages of sleep
