Methods used to study sleep Flashcards
Where are methods used to study sleep carried out?
Mostly take place in sleep laboratories
What does the EEG measure?
Device that detects, amplifies + records the electrical activity that is generated by the brain
Produces distinguishable patterns of electrical activity (brain waves)
Amplitude=
Frequency=
Amplitude= wave height Frequency= how close the waves to one another
Types of Brainwaves:
B: Beta Waves
A: Alpha Waves
T: Theta Waves
D: Delta Waves
What type of waves are present when someone is highly concentrated and focused?
Beta Waves
What type of waves are present when someone is in a relaxed wakefulness state?
Alpha waves
Waves present in stage 1 sleep?
Theta Waves
Waves present in stage 3 + 4 sleep?
Delta waves
What is present in stage 2 sleep?
Sleep spindles and K-complex
What does the EMG do?
Detects, amplify and record the electrical activity of muscles
Info is obtained by electrodes to particular muscles and are recorded in line graphs
What does the EOG (electroculogram) do?
Measuring eye movements or eye positions by detecting, amplifying and recording electrical activity in the eye muscles
Electrodes attached to areas of the face surrounding the eyes
Displayed as line graphs
What are the two types of sleep?
Non Rapid Eye movement Sleep (Non-REM or NREM)
Rapid Eye Movement Sleep (REM)
What is a Hypnogram?
Demonstrates an individuals sleep cycles across one night of sleep
Sleep for an Infant?
13.5 hours majority NREM
Sleep of a child?
11 hours 80/20 NREM/REM
