EEG: Fast activity, high frequency, beta activity

Slow wave/NREM sleep
EEG: brain activity slows, theta activity, drowsiness
EOG: No eye movements
EMG: Muscle tone reduces
What would you expect to find on an EEG, EOG and EMG instates 3&4 of sleep?
EEG: brain activity is even slower, delta activity, low frequency
EOG: no real eye movement
EMG: low muscle tone
What would you expect to find on an EEG, EOG and EMG in stage 5 of sleep?
REM sleep
EEG: fast brain activity, similar to beta activity
EOG: wide eye movements
EMG: minimal muscle tone
How long is one typical sleep cycle?
1-1.5 hours
What are the bodily functions that are synchronised to NREM and REM sleep?
NREM: slow HR and respiration decreases
REM: HR and respiration rate increases
How does the reticular activating system influence arousal?
It is the main control on consciousness which is generally synced with the level of arousal.
It can directly or indirectly through the intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus project to the cortex.
