how were slaves bought and sold
They were sold at marketplaces and they were displayed on rotating platforms with signs around their necks explaining their good qualities
Why did slaves sometimes kill their children?
so their kids would not become slaves themselves
what were the rights of slaves ?
they had no rights and were considered a piece of property
what were slaves labour (jobs)
Slaves worked in mines or on farms, they also worked in households sometimes as tutors (which would mean they need a good education which some slaves do). In mines and farms they were often treated unfairly while those who worked in households were usually considered part of the family.
how were slaves treated?
if slaves were captured after escaping they could be killed, tortured or crucified, they were given clothes and shoes every second year and were given a small amount of food. slaves were also forced to compete in gladiator fights.
how were slaves labelled?
They were chained or wore identification tags. Roman slaves could also be branded incase they escaped. they would be branded with the name of their owner.
how long were slaves in rome?
slaves were in rome until the third century
what happened after the punic wars
after the punic wars over 250,000 slaves were sent to rome, Adults, criminals, and even children
how were slaves freed?
if slaves earned enough money they could buy their freedom, some owners became fond of their slaves so they freed them in their wills and others freed their slaves when they were old or really sick so they would not have to look after them or waste any resources on them since they were most likely to die anyway
What were slaves given to eat/drink?
Around 2kg of bread a day, and less than half a litre of wine a day
