What were the effects of slavery on Africa?

A

-Native crafts died out - coudn’t compete with european traders
-Empty land - people moved away from land to escape war and capture
-Loss of men (young and fit)
-Mixing of villages caused disease to spread
-Losing people, destruction of crops led to famine and starvation
- Increased warfare in Africa due to trade of guns by Europeans and threat of being enslaved

What were the conditions like on the middle passage?

A

-People packed into tiny spaces
-Crew beat the slaves
-Sexual abuse and violence of women
-Diseases like dysentery and smallpox
-Fed slush (corn porridge) twice a day
-No waste disposal so the ship smelled horrible

A

-Stealing weapons when let out for good behavior
-Made weapons out of shackles
-Women were allowed free roaming and thus played a role as the distraction
-Harmed themselves to threaten the captains “cargo”

What was the effect of the slave trade on British ports?

A

-It made Liverpool a very wealthy town, producing goods like guns and textiles and building slave ships £300,000 profit a year
-Created many jobs in Britain such as Ship builders in scotland
-Benefited individuals such as Thomas Leyland, who invested in slave ships.
-Glasgow produced and exported tobacco.
-Money from slavery went to buildings like schools and hospitals
