Who was Olaudah Equiano?
Olaudah Equiano was an African slave who came to London from America. He gained his freedom, helped to support the end of slavery in Britain, and wrote about it in his autobiography.
Who was William Wilberforce?
Wilberforce saw it his life’s mission to end slavery and is remembered for his active participation in getting Parliament to outlaw the slave trade.
He died in 1833, just three days after Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which effectively banned slavery in the British Empire.
Who was Thomas Clarkson?
Abolitionist who worked alongside Wilberforce to achieve the abolition of the Slave Trade.
Who was Sir John Hawkins?
Britain’s first slave trader.
Who was Harriet Trubman?
Slave and abolitionist who escaped captivity but then helped free many other slaves through the Underground Railroad.
What was the Underground Railroad?
The secret network of people who would help slaves escape to freedom.
When did the American Civil War take place?
The American Civil War took place between 1861-1865.
What was Abolition?
The act of putting an end to something.
What was an Abolitionist?
A person who wanted slavery banned.
What is a Constitution?
A list of laws within a country that everyone has to follow.
What was the 13th Amendment?
A change to the US Constitution that banned slavery.
What were the arguments against Slavery?
- Many believed slavery was anti-Christian, so should be abolished.
- It was inhumane and it dehumanised human beings.
- The slaves lived in poor conditions and suffered harsh treatment/punishments
- There was unrest, rebellions and uprisings which made people realise it could not go on much longer.
When was Slavery abolished in the US?
The USA abolished slavery on the 31st January 1865.
It was known as the 13th Amendment and it declared that all people in the United States were free.
When was Slavery abolished in Britain?
The Slave Trade Act 1807, was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom prohibiting the slave trade in the British Empire. This Act abolished the TRADE but not the PRACTICE of slavery.
The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 abolished slavery throughout the British Empire. This Act expanded the jurisdiction of the Slave Trade Act 1807 which made the purchase or ownership of slaves illegal within the British Empire.
Describe how the Slave Trade let to the outbreak of civil war in America.
The key issue for the south was ‘States Rights’ – the freedom of individual states to decide their own rules without control by the central government.
Eleven states decided to leave the Union to form their own separate nation called the ‘Confederate States of America’.
