A

Olaudah Equiano was an African slave who came to London from America. He gained his freedom, helped to support the end of slavery in Britain, and wrote about it in his autobiography.

Who was William Wilberforce?

A

Wilberforce saw it his life’s mission to end slavery and is remembered for his active participation in getting Parliament to outlaw the slave trade.

He died in 1833, just three days after Parliament passed the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which effectively banned slavery in the British Empire.

  • The slaves lived in poor conditions and suffered harsh treatment/punishments

A

The USA abolished slavery on the 31st January 1865.

It was known as the 13th Amendment and it declared that all people in the United States were free.

A

The Slave Trade Act 1807, was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom prohibiting the slave trade in the British Empire. This Act abolished the TRADE but not the PRACTICE of slavery.

The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 abolished slavery throughout the British Empire. This Act expanded the jurisdiction of the Slave Trade Act 1807 which made the purchase or ownership of slaves illegal within the British Empire.
