Outline the capture of slaves
African chiefs sent raiding parties inland from the east coast of Africa and sold the prisoners of war to Europeans for metals, cloth and guns. Slaves were chained in forts until the ship arrived
Outline the transport of slaves
The middle passage took 6 to 12 weeks. Traders would attempt to fit as many slaves onto the ship as possible, resulting in cramped hot living conditions where disease spread rapidly and 1 in 5 slaves died
Outline the auction of slaves
Surviving slaves were cleaned and rubbed with oil (to look healthy) where they were then sold to the highest bidder. Once purchased they were branded with their master’s initials
Outline life on a plantation
Plantations were large farms that grew sugar, tobacco or cotton. Slaves did all the work, harvesting and growing the crop. Slave were whipped for disobedience and seriously punished for rebellion
