Practise of acquiring, transporting and selling Africans as slaves
Slavery definition
A system where Africans were treated like property and denied their freedom
Atlantic slave trade
The lucrative business in slave trading with the Americans. The main cash was cotton and sugar, the growing and harvesting of which were very labour intensive. Slaves were seen as the most efficient way of farming these particular crops. Trader would first sail from British ports to Africa where they would trade British manufactured goods for Africans who would then be transported to the Americans

Who was Granville Sharp
Campaigner to prevent seabed being forcibly taken out of Britain. A founding member of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. In 1767 he helped a slave called Jonathon Strong in court as his master sought to re enslave him.
Who was Thomas Clarkson?
A founder member of the society for effecting the abolition of the slave trade. A tireless reformer where he brought examples of equipment used on slave ships (handcuffs, shackles and branding irons.) to demonstrate the brutality of the trade. Focused his campaigning in Liverpool and Bristol as they had huge ports for the slave trade.
What was the Zong case 1783
The slave ship Zong was in a voyage in 1781 where the captain Luke Collingwood ordered that 133 slaves be thrown off board due to food supplies running low. He wanted to make an insurance claim but the insurers refused to pay the claim and their was a legal case about it.
What was the Haitian revolution 1791
Haiti was a French colony that grew sugar and coffee and generated significant profit. Their was an open rebellion lead by Toussaint L’Ouverture . Around 4000 white people were killed, and 180 plantations burned to the ground

Foreign land that was occupied by a more powerful nation with the deliberate intention of using it for economic gain.
Planter definition
A term used to describe a farmer who planted crops such as sugar, tobacco and cotton on their farm or “plantation” and used slave labour to harvest them
American war of independence
1776-83. A revolutionary war between Britain and its colonies in America. The victorious Americans established their own independent nation which in 1787 became the United States of America

An ideology which maintains a society and government where the head of state is a chosen representative of the people rather than the people being subjects of the head of state
