Slapton Flashcards
Location
The Start Bay coastline is a sediment sub-cell on the South coast of England.
15 miles long.
Erosion
Hydraulic power, wave quarrying, solution, and abrasion are most obvious on Southern coast, because it is the windward side.
Wind
South-west wind leads to longshore drift northwards.
Materials
Offshore currents cycle material from the north back to the south. The sediment sub-cell has a closed nature.
Storm winds
Have come from the north east. High levels of erosive energy. Damaged defences and caused flooding.
Landforms
Largest – 4km barrier beach formed by marine transgression.
Slapton Ley – Freshwater lagoon
Skerries Bank – large sediment store that helps the movement of sediment around the sub-cell
Dancing Beggars – stacks to the North
Torcross sea wall
Built in 1979. Reinforced and extended over time. Only high-value areas are protected (Torcross + Beesands) after cost-benefit analysis.
Sea walls
Over Torcross and Beesands. Protected by rock armour.
2014
5 shingle bastions built to reduce LSD and erosion. INEFFECTIVE. Were eroded soon.
2015
250,000 tonnes of shingle moved from Strete to Torcross. INEFFECTIVE. Washed away in a storm.
2001
Road first damaged in 2001. Managed realignment has moved the road inland twice. INEFFECTIVE. Not a long-term solution.
