Skull (see pg 96 for pictures) Flashcards
Frontal Bone
forms the forehead, the anterior of the skull’s roof, and the roof of the eye orbit (socket)
Parietal bones
form most of the top and the side walls of the cranium
coronal suture
fibrous connective tissue joint that separates the frontal and parietal bones of the skull
sagittal suture
fibrous connective tissue joint between the two parietal bones of the skull
Temporal Bone
bone that forms part of the sides and some of the base of the skull
Mastoid process
part of the temporal bone that projects downward immediately behind the external part of the ear
Squamosal Suture
arches backward from the pterion and connects the temporal squama with the lower border of the parietal bone
Styloid Process
serving as points of attachment for muscles, the slender, pointed process (protrusion) of : temporal bone of the skull
External Auditory Meatus
ear canal; a tube running from the middle ear to the outer ear
Occipital Bone
forms the skulls posterior and part of its base
Lambdoidal suture
joins the occipital bone with the parietal bones in the posterior cranium
Suture
a type of flat, immovable joint that unites the skull bones
External Occipital Protuberance
a prominence about the center of the outer surface of the squamous portion of the occipital bone, giving attachment to the ligamentum nuchae.
Occipital condyles
each of two rounded knobs on the occipital bone that form a joint with the first cervical vertebra
Occipital
pertaining to, or situated near the occiput or the occipital bone (the posterior lobe)
