Flexion
a bending motion that decreases the angle between bones (such as bending the fingers close to the hand)
Extension
Straightening motion that increases the angle between bones (as in straightening the fingers to open the hand)
Abduction
movement away from the midline of the body (as in moving the arm straight out to the side)
Rotation
a twisting or turning of a bone on its own axis
Supination
the act of turning the palm up or forward
Inversion
the act of turning the sole inward, so that it faces the opposite foot
Eversion
the act of turning the sole outward, away from the body (foot)
Pronation
the act of turning the palm down or backward
Dorsiflexion
the foot is bent upward at the angle, narrowing the angle between the leg and the top of the foot
Plantarflexion
pointing the toe downward, flexing the arch of the foot
Adduction
movement toward the midline of the body (as in bringing the arm back to its original position beside the body)
Elevation
Upward movement of structures of the body
Depression
Downward movements of structures of the body
Protraction
movement anteriorly, or forward
Retraction
movement posteriorly, or backward
