Skull & Head Musculature Flashcards
Skull is divided into 2 parts
Neurocranium: surrounds the brain
Viscerocranium: bones of the face around oral & nasal cavities
Neurocranium forms from
paraxial mesoderm sclerotomes (somitomeres + occipital somites)
Cartilaginous neurocranium
forms base of skull (where brain sits)
Membranous neurocranium
Forms flat bones of the calvaria (bones that surround the brain)
Which type of ossification forms the cartilaginous neurocranium
endochondral ossification
How does the cartilaginous neurocranium form?
7 somitomeres form from the sclerotome & migrate ventrally and medially to surround neural tube
Cartilaginous bodies fuse to form
prechordal cartilage, hypophyseal cartilage, ala orbitalis & ala temporalis, otic capsule
Prechordal cartilage
forms ethmoid bones
Hypophyseal cartilage
forms body of sphenoid bone
ala orbitalis and ala temporalis
forms wings of sphenoid
otic capsule
forms petrous portion of temporal bone
4 occipital somites form the
parachordal cartilage
How is the occipital bone formed?
comes from parachordal cartilage
Membranous neurocranium is divided into
parietal and frontal bones
How are frontal bones of the membranous neurocranium formed?
From neural crest cells
