Skull and foramina Flashcards
What are the 8 cranial bones?
Occipital 2x Temporal 2x Parietal Frontal Sphenoid Ethmoid
What are the 14 facial bones
2x Zygomatic 2x Maxilla 2x Nasal 2x Inferior nasal concha 2x Lacrimal 2x Palatine Mandible Vomer
What 2 bones form the coronal structure
Parietal and frontal
What two bones form the sagittal suture
The two parietal bones
What two bones form the lamboid suture
The parietal and occipital bones
Why might you see a frontal suture in adults
It has persisted when the two frontal bones fused during development
Name 4 differences between male and female skulls
The mastoid process on men is more pronounced
The glabella is more pronounced in males
The male mandible is often wider/more square
The male orbit is rounded at the bottom whereas the females is sharper
What is a fontanelle
A gap is the skull bones prior to fusion in infants. Once fused they form the sutures
What is the use of the anterior and posterior fontanelles
Utilised in childbirth - the bones press over each other compressing the skull slightly
What is craniosynostosis
Early fusion of the cranial bones - can be life threatening due to pressure build up
What are the two anterior cranial fossa
Optic canals
superior and inferior orbital fissures
What are the middle 4 cranial fossa
foramen rotundum
foramen ovale
foramen spinosum
foramen lacerum
What are the 4 posterior cranial fossa
Internal auditory meatus
Jugular foramen
Hypoglossal canal
Foramen magnum
What 4 foramen are present on the facial bones
Supra orbital notch
Infra orbital notch
Zygomatic facial foramen
Mental foramen
What are the four sinuses
Frontal sinus
Sphenoid sinus
Ethmoid sinus
Maxillary sinus
