Skull and Cranial Cavity (L2) Flashcards
What neves innervate the scalp?
- Trigeminal nerve
- Spinal Cutaneous nerves
What is the skull comprised of?
- Neurocranium
- Viscerocranium (facial skeleton)
How many bones are in the neurocranium?
8
How many bones are in the viscerocranium?
14
What are the 8 bones in the neurocranium?
- Occipital
- Temporal x2
- Parietal x2
- Sphenoid
- Ethmoid
- Frontal
What are the 14 bones in the viscerocranium?
- Nasal conchae x2
- Nasal bones x2
- Maxilla x2
- Palatine x2
- Zygomatic x2
- Lacrimal x2
- Vomer
- Mandible
What are foramina in the skull?
Openings in the skull that allow nerves and blood vessels to enter/leave the cranial cavity.
What are the Meninges (outermost layer to innermost layer?
- Dura mater
- Arachnoid mater
- Pia mater
What are the roles of the meninges?
- Protection of the brain
- Act as a support network for blood vessels
- To form a fluid-filled cavity to cushion and nourish the brain
What are the two layers of the Dura mater?
- Endosteal (outer)
- Meningeal (inner)
What does the endosteal layer of the Dura mater line?
The skull
What does the meningeal layer of the Dura mater line?
The Brain and spinal cord
What nerves supply the Dura mater?
- Cranial nerve V and X
- C1, C2 and C3 (sympathetic)
What artery supplies the Dura mater?
Middle meningeal artery
What are the three folds of the meningeal layer of the Dura mater?
- Falx cerebri which separates the two cerebral hemispheres of the brain
- Tentorium cerebelli which separates the cerebellar hemispheres from the cerebral hemispheres
- Falx cerebelli which separates the two cerebellar hemispheres of the brain
