Skin (W2) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 layers of the skin
A
- hypodermis
- dermis
- epidermis
2
Q
Describe the hypodermis
A
- mature adipose tissue
- compartmentlaised by fibrous speta
- thickmness & degree of compartmentalisation
3
Q
Describe the dermis
A
- buddles of collsgen fibres and strands of elastic fibres
- small amount of aceullar ground substance
- 2 layers
1. Reticular
2. Papillary
4
Q
Describe the epidermis and its function
A
- outermost layer
- thickest
- protection from the outside world
- metabolic (lipid storage)
5
Q
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis from the bottom
A
- stratum basale
- stratum spinosum
- stratum granulosum
- stratum corenum
6
Q
Descrribe the strtaum basale
A
- deepest layer of epidermis
- new skin cells develop in this layer
- contains; keratinocytes (produce keratin) & melanoctyes (produce melanin providing pigment)
7
Q
Describe the stratum spinosum
A
- contains keratinocytes
- held together by sticky protein desmosomes
- helps make skin flexible and strong
8
Q
Describe the stratum granulosum
A
- keratin flakes/ plates attached at the edges
9
Q
Describe the stratum corneum
A
- top layer we see
- keratinocytes become corneocytes (string dead keratinocytes protecting us from harm
- contsins fats that keep water from asily enaterinf of leaving the body
10
Q
Name the cells of the epidermis and their functions
A
- Keratinocytes - produce keratin protective layer
- Langerhans cells - APC
- Melanocytes - produce melanin protecting us from UV
- Merkel cells - rare neuroendocrine cell (sensory)
11
Q
Descrieb what a hair folicle look sloike in H&E staining
A
- compsoed of several layers
- always associated with sebaceous glands and arrector pili
12
Q
What are sebaceous glands
A
- secret sebum (oily substance)
- holocrine mechansim of secretion
- lubricates the hair and skin
13
Q
Structure
Describe eccrine sweat glands & ducts
A
- highly coiled and straight
- outer layer of contractile cells (myoepithelial cells)
- secret sweat - mostly water, sodium & chloride uons, urea
14
Q
What are the functions of ther skin
A
- protection from mutiple external threats
- moistire contorl
- immunological/antigen presentation
- thermoregulation
15
Q
What are the fiunctions of eccrine glands
A
- thermoregulation
- excretory
