Skin, Sense And Pain Flashcards
Why is the skin so important in
Radiography?
Skin dose influenced by field size due to increased backscatter with increased size
* Skin damage can be caused by cumulative dose from multiple procedures
* Can be mistaken for allergic reactions to defib pads or electrode
* Fluoroscopy time is a poor indicator of risk because it does not account for dose rate or acquisition mode
what are some patient related factors to skin damage
-Compromised skin integrity
-Obesity including overlapping skin folds and location of skin irradiated
- Light fair skin more at risk
- Drugs can increase sensitivity particularly some chemotherapy drugs
what is the integumentary system and what is it made up of?
-the skin and its associated structures.
made up of:
- the skin
-accessory organs e.g nails, haie accessory glans e.g. sweat
-supporting muscles and nerves.
why is the integumentary system important
-all crucial for maintaining homeostasis, protecting internal organs and enabling sensory perception.
-also played a role in social and physiological aspects as skin health and appearance can impact self esteem and social interactions.
what is the skin and what are the 3 main structures
-skin is a complex organ with a multi-layered structure, each layer serving specific functions.
epidermis- outermost later with several sublayers
-dermis- beneath epidermis- thick layer
-subcutaneous- innermost layer
summarise the epidermis layer
epidermis- outermost, superificial layer, thinner and made of epithelial tissue.
function- provides protective barrier against env factors and pathogens.
summarise the dermis layer
dermis lies beneath the epidermis and is thicker, consist of connective tissue,
function: contains blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat glands and sebaceous glands, it provides strength and elasticity to the skin.
summarise the subcutaneous layer
the hypoderis is the deepest layer, composed of areolar and adipose tissue, it connects the dermis to the underlying tissues via connective fibres,
function: acts as a storage site for fat and houses blood vessels that supply the skin. it is sensitive to pressure due to the presence of nerves endings known as corpuscles of touch.
