Briefly describe the epidermis and dermis

A

Epidermis:

  • Avascular (mostly keratinocytes)
  • Forms appendages (hair, nails, glands)

Dermis:

  • Vascular
  • NErves and muscles

Describe skin regeneration in epidermis and dermis.

A

Epidermis is easy to regenerate. Epidermal stem cells.

Dermis is hard to regenerate. Vascularity means it has an immune response, harder to heal.

Descrone the 3 wound repair stages

A
  1. Inflammation
  2. New tissue formation (scab forms, angiogenic)
  3. Remodelling (disorganised collagen, absence of normal appendages)

Describe the 3 burn degrees.

A

First degree - only epidermis
Second degree - involves part of dermis
Third degree = involves all of dermis and often deeper tissues.
