Sensation and Sensory Processing Flashcards
What does stimulus acuity depend on?
Receptor density
Size of receptive fields
Central convergence and lateral inhibition
What is lateral inhibition?
High intensity stimuli causes neurones that receive thme to switch off lower intensity stimuli.
What is the labelled line principle?
Sensory nerve transmits only one modality of sensation to specific location.
Receptor doesn’t dictate what brain will perceive, rather hte location of the afferent nerve.
Adapting speed and what they sense: Tactile (Merkel’s) discs

Slowly adapting.
Adapting speed and what they sense: Tactile (Meissner’s) corpuscle.
Rapidly adapting.

Adapting speed and what they sense: Bulbous (Ruffini’s) corpuscle.
Slowly adapting.

What do golgi tendon organs sense?
Joint position and stretch.
Rapidly adapting.
What do muscle spindles sense?
Rate of change and muscle stretch.
