Skin Morphology Flashcards
Name the four layers of the epidermis
Basal, Prickle, Granular, Keratin
What is the name of the developmental pattern of skin growth?
Blaschkos lines
What protein is expressed in the granular layer that ensures the skin stays moisturised?
Fillagrin
What is the definition of a scar?
The loss of appendages, no hair or sweat glands
Dermo epidermal junction
Interface between dermis and epidermis
What is the DEJ broken down into?
Lamina Lucida, Lamina Densa, Sub lamina densa.
What glands secrete sweat?
Eccrine
What glands secrete pheromones?
Apocrine
What glands are found at the base of the hair follicles
Sebaceous
What is the function of melanocytes?
Produce melanin which is secreted into the cells to protect them from UV
What does melanin do?
Absorbs UV radiation
Where are melanocytes found?
They cap the basal cells to protect the DNA
What are Basal cells?
Located superiorly to the DEJ, these are the stem cells of the skin proliferation and differentiation occur from these cells.
What granule can be used to identify langerhaan cells?
Birbeck granule, tennis racket shape
What is the function of langerhaan cells?
They are a subtype of dendritic cells.
What are the downward projection of the epidermis into the dermis called?
Rete ridges.
What cell make up the epidermis?
Stratified Squamous epithelium
What is a pilosebaceous unit?
A hair follicle and the sebaceous gland
What in hair is the growing phase?
Anagen
How long does Anagen last?
5-7 years
What in hair is the resting phase?
Telogen
What in hair is the involution phase?
Catagen
What occurs in the Catalan phase?
Hair degenerates and falls out
What hormones cause hair growth?
Thyroxine and androgens
