Acne Vulgaris
chronic inflammatory disease of pilosebaceous follicles; comedones, papules, pustules
Open comedones
black-heads, flat or slightly elevated papule with blackened keratin
Closed comedones
white-heads, 1mm papules
Papules and postules size
1-5 mm, caused by inflammation
Location of acne vulgaris
face, chest, back, and shoulders
Atopic dermatitis
chronic, relapsing, pruritic condition that tends to run in families
Sxs of atopic dermatitis
intense pruritis leading to excoriated skin lesions and lichenification
Location of atopic dermatitis
flexural surfaces, antecubital fossa, popliteal fossa, face, extremities
Appearance of acute atopic dermatitis
erythema, vesicle, bullae, crusting
Appearance of subacute atopic dermatitis
scaly plaques, papules, round erosions, crust
Appearance of chronic eczema
lichenification, scaling, hyper- and hypopigmentation
Seborrheic dermatosis
ranges from dandruff to fulminant rash; dryness, pruritus, erythema
Seborrheic keratosis
“stuck-on” waxy appearance that may appear verrucous, well circumscribed
Dermatofibroma
firm papules or nodules; may be flesh, pink, brown, red or black; typically on extremities
“Fitzpatrick sign”
squeezing margin causes dimple, confirms dermatofibroma
