Skin Lesions Flashcards
raised, fluid-filled lesion larger than a vesicle, localized accumulation of serous fluid in epidermis > 5 mm in diameter
Bulla
crack or break in the skin
fissure
flat, colored spot (white, brown, blue, red), without elevation or depression
macule
solid, raised lesion larger than a papule, extending into dermis or subcutaneous tissue > 5 mm- 2 cm in diameter
nodule
small, circular, raised lesions at the surface of the skin, solid elevated lesions <5 mm in diameter, sharply defined
papule
solid, elevated lesions in epidermis > 5 mm in diameter, patch
plaque
raised lesion containg pus; often in a hair follicle or sweat pore, localized accumulation of pus < 5 mm in diameter, yellow, greenish-yellow, white or hemorrhagic.
pustule
lesion resulting from destruction of the skin and perhaps subcutaneous tissue, a skin defect in which there has been loss of epidermis and the upper papillary layer of the dermis
ulcer
small, fluid-filled, raised lesion, localized accumulation of serous fluid in epidermis <5 mm in diameter
vesicle
smooth, rounded, slightly raised area often associated with itching, localized edema in epidermis causing irregulary shaped lesion, may be round, gyrate, or irregular with pseudopods
wheal
localized change in skin color > 1 cm in diameter
patch
solid, elevated lesions extedning into dermis or subcutaneous tissue > 2 cm in diameter
tumor
fluid-filled or solid mass in skin extending into dermis or subcutaneous tissue
cyst
a not so well-defined, large plaque where the skin appears thickened and the skin markings are accentuated
lichenification
What is a rash consisting of papule called?
papular exanthem
what is a rash of pustules called?
pustular exanthem
what is a rash consisting of vesicles?
vesicular exanthem
what is a rash consisting of multiple wheals called?
urticaral exanthem
increased rate of proliferation of epidermal cells, large, tiny, adherent or loose; densely adherent scales that have a gritty feel
scales
serum, blood, or purulent exudate that has dried on the skin surface may be thin, delicate, and friable or thick and adherent
crust
defect only of the epidermis, not involving the dermis, heal without a scar
erosion
sharply-defined, linear or wedge-shaped tear in the epidermis with abrupt/vertical walls, Narrower than an erosion, Usually not as deep as a laceration or ulcer but sometimes extends into the dermis.
fissure
type 1 fitzpatrick skin type
always burns, never tans
type 2 Fitzpatrick Skin Types
usually burn, tan with difficulty
type 3 Fitzpatrick Skin Types
sometimes mild burns, average tanning tendency
type 4 Fitzpatrick Skin Types
rarely burn, tan easily
type 5 Fitzpatrick Skin Types
seldom burns, deepening of color
type 6 Fitzpatrick Skin Types
does not burn, no change in color
tearing, torn ragged, mangled wound
laceration
lesion
discontinuity of tissue or loss of function
excise
cut off
incise
cut into
bite
the amount of tissue taken when placing a suture needle
ligate
tie off
sound
probe deep with a blunt instrument
debride
clean away damaged or necrotic tissue
Dehiscence
The splitting or bursting open of a wound
