Skin Layers Plus Function Flashcards
What are the layers of the skin?
Epidermis
Dermis
Hypodermis (fatty tissue, adipose, subcutaneous tissue)
How many layers in the epidermis?
5
What are the layers of the epidermis?
Stratum corneum Stratum lucidum Stratum Granulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum germinativum (basale)
What is the stratum germanitivum?
It’s alive
Connected with stratum spinosum both are basal layer
Mitosis happens
Has melanocytes
What it’s keratinization?
When the cells go up to the surface of the skin
What is desquamation?
When cells sloughs off
Stratum spinosum?
The stratum germanitivum and spinosum are connected together (basal layer)
Mitosis forms
And make melanocytes
Stratum granulosum?
Middle layer of epidermis
Cells are dead
80% dead
Stratum lucidum?
It’s a see through
Because we need some Vit D in our body
Stratum corneum?
It has 15 to 20 layers
Dead skin cells
How many melanocytes do we have?
15 thousand per sq ft
Melanocytes it’s our natural sunblock
How many days do our skin cells surface to skin?
28 days but the older we get the slower it keratinize
Baby it’s 3-4 days
How many layers in the dermis?
Two layers
Reticular and papillary layer
Papillary layer?
Upper layer of the dermis
30%
Contains more capillaries (touch heat cold )
Reticular layer?
2nd layer of the dermis 70% Composed of water Nerve endings Blood vessels Has fibroblast cells
Fibroblasts?
In the reticular layer of the dermis
1 is a fibrocyte
Produces collagen (70%) and elastin (30%) and gligcocinimoglycans which is a sugar molecule holding water to skin
How do fibroblast works?
After 25 we don’t produce any collagen or elastin
Once you hit menopause after 5 yrs we lose 30% collagen +elastin
What are floaters?
Floaters It’s collagen floating around
If we see them we need to decrease sugar and take antioxidants and vitamins
How can we trigger the fibroblast ?
Anytime we do trauma to the skin we stimulate the fibroblast -microneddling -microdermabrasion (aggressively) Chemical peel (deep peel) Last (dr does)
Macrophages?
It's a leukocyte (white blood cells) In the dermis Devours foreign material such as bacteria to protect body Thus removing dead debris 1st line of defense
