What is the epidermis?
Outer layer, a vascular (no blood vessels) receives nourishment from dermis
What’s the 3 layers of the skin?
Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis
What is the dermis?
Inner layer, (contains blood vessels) oil glands, sweat glands, hair follicle, fat tissue
What is the hypodermis?
Deepest layers
What is keratin?
Protein found on skin; hair & nails.
Prevents water from entering skin
What is melanocytes? And where is it made by?
Cells on the skin, melanin which gives skin out color. Made by keratinocytes
Albinism ?
Lack of melanin. Production (genetic disease)
Eccrine sweat gland
All over the body
Apocrine sweat
Oil secretion, under armpit/genital area
Functions of hair
Protection, sensory, thermoregulation
Sebaceous glands
Oil producing glands
Arrector pili
Smooth muscle attached to follicle, raises hair, adds insulation, warms body
Special types of hair
Lanugo-appears during 3 trimester
Vellus- women and children
Terminal- scalp, ancillary, pubic
Open cut
Wound
Types of burns
First degree- sunburn
Second degree- sunburn w/ blisters
Third degree- nerve endings are destroyed and blood vessels
