Skin immunology Flashcards
1
Q
How does the skin protect from infection?
A
Physical barrier Desiccation Secretion of antimicrobial peptides Commensal skin bacteria Immune cells Cytokines Chemokines
2
Q
What are the five possible states the immune system can take?
A
Normal immune reaction
Hypersensitivity- Over reaction to antigen
Immunodeficiency
Autoimmunity
Autoinflammation- Something sets off inflammatory cascade.
3
Q
What are the main immune cells in the skin?
A
Langerhans cells Mast cells Macrophages T cells Neutrophils
4
Q
What are Langerhans cells?
A
Main resident immune cell in the skin. Antigen presenting cells that first meet infection and prime the adaptive immune system.
5
Q
What kinds of T cell are found in the skin and what is their role?
A
CD8+ in the epidermis- Cytotoxic (kill pathogens)
CD4+ in the dermis- Helper T cells to coordinate
