macule
flat, distinct, discolored area of skin less than 1 cm wide that does not involve any change in the thickness or texture of the skin
Patches
spots of skin that are lighter or darker than your regular skin color. Patches may also have a red, purple, or blue tint. Patches may be confused with macules, but macules are very small and are usually less than 1 centimeter wide. Birthmarks, vitiligo, and hemophilia are all examples of patches.
papule
solid raised <1cm lesion that has distinct borders
examples: warts, moles, eczema
plaque
>1 cm solid raised flat-topped lesion
example: psoriasis
nodule
>1cm solid raised non-flat-topped lesions
vesicle
<1cm raise lesion, filled with clear fluid
example: chicken pox, herpes virus
bulla
larger vesicles; a bubble like cavity filled with fluid/air
examples: simple friction blisters, auto immune disease
pustule
raised lesion filled with pus
example: acne, folliculitis
wheal
papule or plaque with erythematous borders and pale center, can be very itchy! tend to resolve in 24-48 hrs (evanescent)
example: hives
